Medical Insurance in Georgia

Medical Insurance in Georgia

The issue of medical insurance in Georgia is becoming increasingly important for foreign tourists: while previously having an insurance policy was only a recommendation, as of January 1, 2026, it has become a mandatory requirement for entry into the country. According to the new regulations, insurance must cover medical expenses during the stay, including both emergency and routine care, as well as hospitalization. The minimum coverage limits are approximately $5,000 for outpatient services and at least $30,000 for inpatient treatment. In the absence of supporting documents, border authorities have the right to deny entry.

However, even aside from the new legal requirements, insurance in Georgia remains an important element of financial security. Medical services for foreigners in the country are provided on a paid basis, and in case of illness or injury, expenses can be quite high. Therefore, many travelers, expats, and digital nomads prefer to arrange medical insurance in advance to avoid unexpected costs.

The insurance market in Georgia is fairly well developed. Around a dozen companies operate in the country, offering a variety of programs and services. In this article, we will review five of the most popular ones, compare the available plans, and analyze their costs.

GPI Holding

GPI Holding is one of the largest insurance companies in Georgia. It is part of the international Vienna Insurance Group and provides property, life, health, and motor insurance, as well as specialized policies for travelers.

The company’s individual health insurance lineup includes three main plans:

  • Medi Standard – a basic plan priced at approximately 40 GEL (≈ $15) per month.
  • Medi Classic – an extended plan starting from 65 GEL (≈ $24) per month.
  • Medi Premium – the most comprehensive plan starting from 75 GEL (≈ $28) per month.

All plans include outpatient consultations, laboratory tests, primary diagnostics, and emergency medical care. The higher the plan level, the broader the range of covered medical services, examinations, and additional benefits.

It is important to note that such insurance plans are typically issued for one year (with the option to renew). Foreign nationals are usually required to pay for the full annual period upfront, while Georgian citizens may opt for monthly payments.

GPI Holding also offers a separate insurance product for foreign visitors – Tourist Mandatory, which covers basic medical expenses, including emergency and inpatient care. The policy costs approximately 2–3 GEL per day (≈ $0.7–1.1) and can be issued for a period ranging from 3 to 365 days.

Aldagi

Aldagi primarily specializes in property and liability insurance and is also actively involved in the corporate sector. Its portfolio includes products such as motor insurance, property insurance, life insurance, business insurance, and liability coverage.

Unlike some other insurers, Aldagi does not offer a wide range of individual health insurance plans for everyday use. In most cases, medical insurance is provided through employers as part of corporate programs or included in specialized insurance products.

For foreign visitors to Georgia, Aldagi offers a separate insurance product – Visitors Travel Insurance, which covers the main risks during a trip, including emergency medical care (including dental), outpatient and inpatient treatment in case of illness or accidents, medical transportation, and repatriation. The price is similar to GPI’s offering and typically ranges from 2–4 GEL per day (≈ $0.7–1.5).

The policy can be purchased online, and the document is issued in electronic form, allowing it to be presented at the border directly from a phone. Insurance coverage can be arranged for different durations – from short trips to longer stays.

Ardi Insurance

Ardi Insurance specializes in insurance products for both individual clients and businesses, including health insurance, motor insurance, property insurance, and travel programs.

One of the company’s key areas of focus is individual health insurance. The lineup includes three main plans:

  • Vitamin A – a basic plan starting from 49 GEL (≈ $18) per month, with a maximum coverage limit of 20,000 GEL (≈ $7,400).
  • Vitamin B – an extended plan starting from 59 GEL (≈ $22) per month. The maximum coverage limit increases to 25,000 GEL (≈ $9,260).
  • Vitamin C – the most comprehensive health insurance plan starting from 85 GEL (≈ $31) per month, offering up to 60% coverage of medical services, 100% coverage of hospitalization, and a maximum coverage limit of 30,000 GEL (≈ $11,110).

For foreign visitors, a separate travel insurance product – Welcomer – is available. It is valid within Georgia for the duration of the trip and is designed for short-term stays in the country.

Imedi L

Imedi L primarily specializes in health insurance. The company is part of one of the largest healthcare groups in the country and provides programs for both individual clients and the corporate sector.

The company offers three main plans:

  • Uno Active – a basic health insurance plan starting from 45 GEL (≈ $17) per month. It includes outpatient medical services, laboratory tests, and doctor consultations.
  • Uno Comfort – an extended plan starting from 55 GEL (≈ $20) per month.
  • Uno Select – the most comprehensive plan starting from 72 GEL (≈ $27) per month.

In addition to standard plans, Imedi L offers a separate insurance product for short-term stays of foreign visitors in Georgia, in line with the mandatory health insurance requirements for tourists.

The policy covers emergency medical and dental care, outpatient and inpatient treatment, medical transportation, and treatment in case of accidents.

The cost of a travel insurance policy typically starts from 2 GEL (≈ $0.7) per day, depending on the duration of the trip and the selected level of coverage.

TBC Insurance

TBC Insurance is part of the financial ecosystem of TBC Bank, one of the largest banks in Georgia. Founded in 2016, the company provides insurance products for both individuals and businesses, including life and property insurance, motor insurance, and travel policies.

Unlike some other insurers, TBC Insurance does not offer traditional individual health insurance plans for everyday use. The company’s main focus is on programs related to financial protection of life and health.

Среди основных программ компании:

  • Life Insurance – a life insurance policy that provides financial support to the insured person’s family. In the event of an insured incident, the company pays the amount specified in the contract to the beneficiary or their heirs.
  • Critical Illness Insurance – provides a payout upon diagnosis of serious medical conditions, including heart attack, stroke, and cancer.
  • Student Health and Personal Accident Insurance – mandatory insurance for international students studying in Georgia, covering medical expenses in case of sudden illness or accident.

In addition to these products, TBC Insurance also provides short-term travel insurance for travelers, covering emergency medical care, outpatient and inpatient treatment, medical transportation, and treatment in case of accidents.

Depending on the selected plan, the policy can cover medical expenses of up to $60,000 if an illness or injury occurs during the trip.

Conclusion

The choice of a specific insurance plan depends on the purpose of the trip, the length of stay, and the desired level of medical coverage. However, in any case, having insurance not only helps meet legal requirements but also provides peace of mind during travel, ensuring that medical care will be accessible without significant financial burden in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
